Leclanché SA, a Swiss energy storage solutions provider, has announced the launch of XN50, the world’s first lithium-ion battery cell featuring Echion Technologies’ XNO niobium-based active anode material. This innovative cell is designed to meet the demands of heavy-duty applications in the rail, marine, and mining sectors by offering enhanced performance and longevity.

Developed through a joint collaboration between Leclanché and Echion Technologies, the XN50 cell delivers significant advantages over existing battery chemistries. It offers an estimated cycle life exceeding 10,000 cycles, making it ideal for applications that require long-term durability. The cell also provides 50% higher energy density compared to traditional lithium titanate oxide (LTO) technologies and supports fast charging while maintaining high safety standards and performance in extreme conditions.

Leclanché plans to replace its current LTO offerings with the XN50 cell and integrate it into a new range of battery modules and pack solutions alongside its existing graphite/nickel manganese cobalt oxide (G/NMC) products. The XN50 cell also features Leclanché’s unique water-based cathode formulation, ensuring the electrodes are PFAS-free and further reducing environmental impact.

“We are absolutely delighted to announce the launch of the world’s first commercial XNO Li-ion cell,” said Pierre Blanc, Chief Executive Officer at Leclanché SA. “XNO is set to displace the use of LTO within our product line and will complement our current G/NMC offerings as the go-to fast-charging battery solution for heavy-duty applications.”

Jean de La Verpilliere, Chief Executive Officer of Echion Technologies, commented, “Congratulations to the Leclanché teams. With XN50, they are setting a new standard for heavy-duty Li-ion batteries. We are proud to have supported them in developing this industry-leading cell and look forward to seeing it deployed at scale.”
