REC Silicon ASA stands as a global player in producing high-purity silicon materials, with a specific focus on silane-based products. Since its establishment in 1996, the company has developed advanced manufacturing processes for creating essential materials used in electronics, solar technology, and battery production. Their expertise spans across various silicon-based products, including their flagship Signature Silane® gas, specialty silicon gases, and electronic-grade polysilicon. These materials serve as fundamental components in multiple industries, from semiconductor manufacturing to renewable energy applications.

Battery Technology

REC Silicon’s contribution to battery manufacturing centers on their Signature Silane® product line, which serves as a critical component in lithium-ion battery production. The silane gas plays an essential role in creating silicon-based anode materials, which enhance battery performance and energy density. Through precise manufacturing processes, REC Silicon produces ultra-pure silane gas that meets the stringent requirements for battery-grade materials.

The company’s technological capabilities include both traditional Siemens technology and advanced Fluidized Bed Reactor (FBR) systems for producing granular polysilicon. This dual approach enables efficient production while maintaining high material purity levels. REC Silicon has established partnerships with major battery manufacturers, including a significant agreement with Sila Nanotechnologies for supplying silane in the production of Titan Silicon anode material, which is utilized in electric vehicle batteries for companies like Mercedes-Benz and Panasonic Energy.

Recent Projects

As of early 2024, REC Silicon announced significant operational changes, including the cessation of polysilicon production at their Moses Lake, Washington facility. The company has shifted its strategic focus to become a dedicated silicon gas provider, maintaining equipment for potential future silicon gas production. This transition affects partnerships with companies like Group14 Technologies, which had planned to use REC Silicon’s silane gas for battery anode materials. The company also ceased polysilicon production at their Butte, Montana facility, while continuing silane gas production operations.

Investors

Hanwha Solutions Corporation holds the largest stake in REC Silicon ASA with 33.33% ownership as of 2022. Other significant institutional investors include DNB Asset Management AS (1.079%), Lodbrok Capital LLP (1.002%), Erste Asset Management GmbH (1.189%), and Storebrand Asset Management AS (0.8024%). These investments demonstrate continued confidence in REC Silicon’s strategic direction and market position in the silicon materials industry.
