Rock Tech Lithium Inc. announced that its Lithium Converter Project in Guben, Germany, has been designated as a Strategic Project under the European Union’s Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA). This recognition highlights the project’s significance to Europe’s battery materials supply chain and supports Rock Tech’s objective of supplying sustainable, locally produced lithium to the region.

The Guben Converter is set to produce 24,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium hydroxide annually, which is sufficient to power over 500,000 electric vehicles. This production capacity is a crucial component in meeting the growing demand for lithium in the electric vehicle and energy storage sectors.

The CRMA, which came into effect in May 2024, is a key initiative aimed at ensuring a resilient and sustainable supply of 17 critical raw materials essential for Europe’s energy transition. The act focuses on enhancing the European Union’s capabilities in the extraction, processing, and refining of these strategic materials, thereby reducing dependency on imports from third countries while adhering to stringent environmental and social standards.

Rock Tech Lithium submitted its application among more than 170 proposals to the European Commission. The selection of the Guben Converter in such a competitive process underscores the project’s strategic importance. The European Commission has allocated an initial funding pool of €2 billion to support selected projects through loans, financing, and guarantees.

“This milestone not only affirms the strategic value of our Guben project but also positions us as a key enabler of Europe’s green industrial future. We are honored to be recognized as a Strategic Project by the European Commission and remain fully committed to advancing a secure, sustainable, and independent lithium supply for Europe.” says Dirk Harbecke, CEO & Chairman Rock Tech Lithium.

The designation as a Strategic Project is expected to accelerate the development and implementation of the Guben Converter, reinforcing Rock Tech’s role in the European battery supply chain. The project aligns with broader efforts to support the region’s transition to renewable energy and reduce its carbon footprint.

Rock Tech Lithium continues to focus on expanding its capacity and advancing technologies to meet the increasing demand for high-purity lithium products. The company’s initiatives are integral to supporting the global shift toward electrification and sustainable energy solutions.
