Sionic Energy, a leader in electrolyte and silicon battery technology, has announced a significant advancement in lithium-ion battery design by fully replacing graphite with Group14 Technologies’ silicon-carbon composite, SCC55™, in the anode. This innovation is set to deliver the highest energy density performance in silicon batteries, aiming for a 42% increase in energy density.
Designed for seamless integration into existing manufacturing processes, Sionic’s Silicon Battery Platform enhances silicon material performance, achieving extended cycle life and rapid charging capabilities. The platform supports various cell formats—including cylindrical, pouch, and prismatic—facilitating broad adoption across commercial markets through a licensing model.
Key performance metrics of Sionic’s 100% silicon batteries include:
- Specific Energy: At least 330 Wh/kg
- Energy Density: At least 842 Wh/L
- Cycle Life: Up to 1,200 full cycles in 4Ah to 10Ah cell formats
Verification is ongoing for a 20Ah cell format designed to deliver an energy density of 370 Wh/kg and 1,000 Wh/L, expected to be available in 2025.
“Having worked extensively with several leading silicon materials in our product designs over the past several years, we’ve chosen Group14 as the best-in-class performer to launch our Silicon Battery Platform,” said President and CEO of Sionic Energy, Ed Williams.
“Group14’s customers continue to raise the bar for battery performance, and we are pleased to support Sionic’s silicon batteries with an anode powered entirely by Group14’s SCC55™,” added Dr. Rick Costantino, co-founder and CTO of Group14 Technologies, the world’s largest global manufacturer and supplier of advanced silicon battery materials.
As the industry moves toward enhancing lithium-ion battery performance, silicon has emerged as a pivotal material for anodes. The collaboration between Sionic Energy and Group14 Technologies is poised to deliver groundbreaking performance across transportation, consumer electronics, and aviation sectors.
