Dongfeng Motor’s premium electric vehicle division, Voyah, has initiated research on its third-generation solid-state battery technology, according to local media outlet Cailian. The upcoming power battery system is designed to maintain an energy density of 300 Wh/kg while significantly enhancing its charging capabilities with an increased charging multiplier of 3 to 5 C.
The C-rate measures how quickly a battery can be charged or discharged relative to its capacity. A 5 C rate means the battery can be fully charged in approximately 12 minutes. Voyah’s advanced solid-state batteries feature zero electrolyte content, which not only enhances safety by reducing the risk of leaks and thermal runaway but also allows the batteries to operate efficiently across a wide range of temperatures.
Voyah was established by Dongfeng in late 2020, introducing its first model, the Voyah Free, in June 2021. The brand expanded its lineup with the launch of the Dream MPV on May 7, 2022, followed by the Zhuiguang sedan on April 18, 2023. The company’s initial semisolid batteries have already been deployed in the Dream MPV and Zhuiguang sedan, showcasing the practical application of their battery technology in production vehicles.
In the previous year, Voyah unveiled its Amber Battery, which offers an energy density of 212 Wh/kg and claims a driving range of over 900 kilometers. This battery operates on an 800-volt platform and boasts an ultra-fast charging capability of 5 C, enabling it to replenish 450 kilometers of range within just 10 minutes of charging. These advancements highlight Voyah’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of battery technology to meet the growing demands of the electric vehicle market.
The development of third-generation solid-state batteries is expected to further improve charging speeds and maintain high energy density, thereby enhancing the performance and efficiency of Voyah’s electric vehicles. Solid-state batteries also typically offer longer lifespans and improved safety compared to traditional liquid electrolyte batteries, positioning Voyah to better compete in the increasingly competitive electric vehicle industry.
Voyah’s ongoing investment in battery technology underscores the company’s strategy to lead innovation within the electric vehicle sector, aiming to deliver high-performance, reliable, and efficient electric vehicles to consumers.
