Adionics is a French company founded in 2012, specializing in sustainable and efficient technologies for lithium extraction and battery enhancement. As a leader in Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) and advanced battery solutions, Adionics addresses the growing global demand for lithium, a critical component in lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles (EVs), renewable energy storage, and other clean energy applications. The company is dedicated to reducing the environmental impact of lithium production and recycling, offering innovative solutions that support the transition to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.

Adionics operates with a focus on liquid-liquid extraction technologies, using its proprietary Flionex® system to extract high-purity lithium from various sources, including brines and battery recycling processes. With a commitment to sustainability, the company minimizes water usage, eliminates toxic chemicals, and reduces carbon emissions associated with lithium production. Headquartered in Les Ulis, France, and with a presence in Salta, Argentina, Adionics is actively expanding its global footprint to meet the increasing demand for lithium and battery technologies.

Battery Technology

Adionics is known for its Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology, which utilizes a patented liquid-liquid extraction process. This method relies on the company’s proprietary Flionex® system, a specialized fluid that efficiently and selectively extracts lithium salts from brines, geothermal water, production water, and battery recycling byproducts. The process operates without traditional reagents, acids, or toxic chemicals, making it environmentally friendly and sustainable.

One of the key advantages of Adionics’ technology is its high efficiency, achieving lithium recovery rates of up to 98% from brines and producing lithium chloride with purity levels as high as 99%. This makes the extracted lithium immediately suitable for use in battery production. Additionally, the closed-loop system significantly reduces water consumption and eliminates waste, aligning with global efforts to minimize the environmental impact of lithium mining and recycling.

In addition to its DLE technology, Adionics is developing Smart 3D Electrodes for batteries. These electrodes enhance battery performance by improving heat dissipation, enabling faster charging, increasing power output, and ensuring greater stability. The electrode fabrication process is scalable and compatible with existing battery manufacturing facilities, making it a cost-effective solution for various applications, including EVs, renewable energy storage, and consumer electronics. Moreover, the technology is chemistry-agnostic, meaning it can be applied to different battery chemistries such as lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt-oxide (NMC), lithium iron phosphate (LFP), silicon, and solid-state batteries.

Recent Projects

In late 2023, Adionics successfully completed a 1,500-hour trial of its Flionex® DLE technology at SQM’s Atacama salar site in Chile. The trial demonstrated a lithium recovery rate of up to 98% and achieved lithium chloride purity levels of 99%, meeting strict battery-grade standards. This marked a significant milestone in the technology’s readiness for industrial-scale deployment.

Adionics also inaugurated a demonstration plant in Güemes, Argentina, to test its DLE technology on different brines. The plant is part of the company’s efforts to transition from pilot projects to full-scale industrial operations. Additionally, Adionics introduced a new version of its Flionex® technology tailored for battery recycling, enabling the extraction of high-purity lithium from battery black mass without generating toxic waste or requiring overseas processing.

Investors

Adionics has attracted significant funding from a range of investors, including Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile (SQM), a global leader in lithium production. Other notable investors include Bpifrance, which participated through the PSIM funds managed as part of the France 2030 program, and returning investors such as Supernova Invest, Céleste Management SA, and Ovive. These investors have supported Adionics in advancing its technology and expanding its operations globally.
