In September 2025, BYD Group reported a 5.9% year-over-year decline in global sales, delivering 393,060 vehicles compared with the same month last year. This marks the first quarterly contraction since 2020, following two months of near-flat performance in July and August. The decline was driven primarily by weaker sales under the core BYD brand, which fell 11.4% to 355,774 units in September after an 3.6% decrease in August.
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) deliveries were particularly affected, dropping 25.6% to 188,010 units. This represents the sixth consecutive month of PHEV sales declines for the Shenzhen-based automaker. By contrast, battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales rose 24.3% year-over-year to 205,050 units, helping to cushion the overall downturn.

BYD’s newer sub-brands recorded strong gains in September. Fang Cheng Bao, which focuses on rugged sport-utility vehicles, saw sales surge 345% to 24,121 units. Premium marque Denza grew 20.5% to 12,407 units, while supercar brand Yangwang achieved a 145% increase to 758 units.

The company’s overseas business also contributed to growth, with international deliveries up 115.8% to 71,256 vehicles. Earlier this week, BYD completed deployment of an eight-vessel export fleet, collectively capable of transporting one million vehicles per year, the final ship having entered service under the name BYD Jinan.
For the third quarter of 2025, BYD Group’s total global sales of 1,105,591 units represented a 2.1% decline compared with Q3 2024. Brand sales fell 4.0%, while exports jumped 146.4% to 232,806 units. In the quarter, PHEV deliveries dropped 23.7% to 523,069, and BEV volumes rose 31.4% to 582,522.
These results come amid record-high performance by several Chinese electric vehicle startups. Leapmotor achieved over 60,000 monthly sales for the first time, and companies such as Nio, Xiaomi and Xpeng posted all-time September highs. BYD’s main domestic competitor, Geely, delivered 442,672 EVs (BEV and PHEV) in Q3, up 96.2%, driven largely by its Galaxy brand.
