Shandong Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited (Shandong CATL), a subsidiary of CATL, has commenced operations at its new energy storage and power battery manufacturing facility in Yanzhou District, Jining City. This facility represents CATL’s first operational base in northern China and its largest site in the region based on planned annual production capacity.
Constructed to the “Lighthouse + Zero Carbon Factory” standards, the new base features some of the world’s most advanced digital and intelligent production lines, according to CATL. The development is planned in three phases. Phase I, currently operational, covers over 800 mu (approximately 53 hectares) with a total floor area of 520,000 square meters and a planned production capacity of 60 GWh. This phase includes fully integrated smart production and living support infrastructure. Phases II and III are expected to become operational within the next two years, ultimately forming a new energy battery industrial cluster valued at around 100 billion yuan.
In addition to the manufacturing plant, CATL is developing a 1.8 billion yuan centralized photovoltaic power project in Yanzhou, with a total capacity of 450 MW. To date, 317 MW has been connected to the grid, generating a cumulative 580 million kilowatt-hours of electricity. The company has also completed the first phase of a 900 million yuan shared energy storage station, designed for a capacity of 200 MW/400 MWh, and has delivered 68 million kilowatt-hours of stored electricity so far.
A company representative stated that the project establishes a comprehensive new energy industry chain by integrating green energy supply with battery application scenarios, aligning with the company’s strategic objectives. Since initiating its investment in Shandong in 2022, CATL has steadily expanded its presence in the province, viewing it as a key strategic region.
On the day of the new plant’s launch, CATL signed several framework agreements to enhance local partnerships. These agreements include jointly building a zero-carbon city with Jining, promoting battery-swap models with the Shandong Department of Transportation, co-developing a new energy industrial park with the Jining municipal government, and partnering with Jining Port and Shipping Development Co. Ltd. to create a green, intelligent demonstration route along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal.
Robin Zeng, CATL Chairman and CEO, emphasized that the company’s objectives extend beyond battery manufacturing. By leveraging its strengths in product and technology, along with its carbon-reduction experience, CATL aims to build an efficient, clean, and safe zero-carbon industrial ecosystem. He noted that the company plans to deepen cooperation in establishing pilot zones for battery-swap networks for new energy vehicles, developing the low-altitude economy in the Bohai Rim region, promoting the electrification of inland and coastal shipping, and accelerating the construction of the Dongying Zero-Carbon Industrial Park. These initiatives are expected to contribute to the province’s green, low-carbon, and high-quality development.
