China’s leading automakers and battery suppliers have joined forces to create a unified digital framework for battery data, with the goal of supporting the growing global electric vehicle (EV) and energy storage markets. At the 2025 Automotive Intelligent Data Ecosystem Conference in Tianjin, Geely, Great Wall Motor, Chery and Nio partnered with battery manufacturers—including Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), FinDreams Battery and CALB—to unveil progress on the Battery ID digital ecosystem initiative. The effort is designed to standardize reliable battery data and streamline compliance reporting across different regions.
Developed by China Automotive Data Company, the Battery ID program builds on the firm’s earlier work in power battery lifecycle tracking. It comprises three core components: a Battery ID management system for standardized data collection, a Data Interaction Connector for system integration, and a Battery ID service platform that generates unique identifiers for each battery. These tools address the need to verify production details, regulatory compliance and technical specifications as Chinese EVs and storage solutions reach overseas markets. In 2024, the platform completed its first full workflow integration, enabling participating companies to issue trusted battery certificates.
In 2025, the initiative expanded to cover energy storage batteries, and the first certification rules for Battery ID were introduced in collaboration with TÜV SÜD. These rules cover data accuracy, integration processes and transmission security. Thirteen companies formed seven joint working teams to test connectivity and authentication in real-world scenarios. During the conference, four automakers and three battery suppliers issued eleven Battery IDs for power batteries and two for energy storage batteries after completing the certification process.
The event also marked the launch of an Automotive Industry Trusted Data Space Platform, aimed at creating national automotive data infrastructure and public service capabilities. A technical committee was established to guide standards on interoperability and security management.
Additionally, China Automotive Data Company announced a pilot for cross-border data circulation with the Tianjin Dongjiang Free Trade Zone, Geely and CATL. The pilot will develop classification standards, a data circulation service center, and simulate end-to-end data flows to support the compliant transfer of verified battery information to international markets.
