China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) retail market showed continued year-on-year growth in the first half of June, according to data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). From June 1 to 15, passenger NEV retail sales totaled 402,000 units, marking a 38 percent increase compared with the same period last year and remaining flat month-on-month. Cumulative NEV retail sales for the year reached 4.76 million units, up 35 percent year-on-year.
Wholesale deliveries of passenger NEVs during June 1–15 stood at 369,000 units, an 18 percent rise year-on-year but a 2 percent decline from the prior month. Year-to-date wholesale volumes reached 5.576 million units, representing a 38 percent increase from the same period in 2024.
In the overall passenger vehicle segment, total retail sales for the first two weeks of June hit 706,000 units, up 20 percent year-on-year yet down 9 percent month-on-month. Cumulative retail volumes for all passenger vehicles reached 9.522 million units, a 10 percent year-on-year increase. Within this mix, NEVs accounted for a 57 percent share of retail sales from June 1 to 15, with the year-to-date penetration rate nearly 50 percent at 49.98 percent.
Weekly and daily averages also reflected these trends. From June 1 to 8, the average daily retail sales of passenger vehicles were 42,102 units—up 17 percent year-on-year but down 14 percent month-on-month—revised slightly downward from earlier figures. In the week of June 9–15, average daily retail sales rose to 52,694 units, 23 percent higher year-on-year though 5 percent lower month-on-month.
Wholesale figures showed a total of 714,000 passenger vehicles sold from June 1 to 15, up 24 percent year-on-year and 4 percent month-on-month. Daily wholesale averages were 38,836 units in early June and 57,683 units in the second week, with respective year-on-year gains of 10 percent and 38 percent. Year-to-date wholesale sales totaled 11.504 million units, a 12 percent increase from 2024.
In the week ending June 15, insurance registration data highlighted Tesla at 15,500 units and Xiaomi at 5,600 units, while Nio Inc.—including its Onvo and Firefly brands—recorded 4,730 registrations, up 9.2 percent from the previous week.
