In order to further industrialize its plasma-based electrode manufacturing process, battery technology start-up Intecells announced on October 8, 2025, that it had obtained a strategic investment from automation and robotics expert Comau. As part of the agreement, Comau has taken an equity stake in Intecells and the two companies will jointly validate the technology with prospective cell-makers, offering it as a turnkey addition to existing battery production lines.

Intecells’ core innovation uses an atmospheric plasma treatment to modify electrode surfaces, improving electrolyte absorption and eliminating key bottlenecks associated with liquid filling. According to the company, this approach shortens cycle times, lowers energy consumption and cuts carbon emissions. The process also supports dry-coating of electrodes, removing the need for toxic solvents, binders and the energy-intensive drying phase typical of conventional methods.

Beyond boosting manufacturing efficiency, Intecells and Comau expect the collaboration to enhance cell performance. The plasma treatment is designed to increase active material loading and improve cycle life and overall quality across a range of cell formats and chemistries. By integrating the technology into both new and retrofit production lines, the partners aim to deliver a scalable solution that meets rising demand for high-performance batteries.

Xiaohong Gayden, founder and chief executive officer of Intecells, said the investment marks a significant step forward in expanding the company’s manufacturing footprint and accelerating product development. “Comau’s expertise in automation and robotics will be instrumental in bringing our plasma platform to commercial scale, helping us deliver greater value to customers,” she commented.

Pietro Gorlier, chief executive officer of Comau, noted that the deal underscores the company’s commitment to innovation-driven growth. “Our partnership with Intecells exemplifies how we can integrate advanced technologies into battery cell lines, driving both sustainability and productivity gains,” he added.
