An electric vehicle equipped with SAMSUNG SDI’s 21700 cylindrical battery cells has established a new Guinness World Record for distance traveled on a single charge. The Lucid Air Grand Touring, developed by Lucid Motors, completed a 1,205-kilometer (749-mile) journey in July 2025, departing from St. Moritz, Switzerland, and concluding in Munich, Germany. The route included a mix of alpine passes, highways, and secondary roads, showcasing real-world driving conditions.
This achievement surpasses the previous record of 1,045 kilometers by 160 kilometers and underscores the combined strengths of SAMSUNG SDI’s cell technology and Lucid’s in-house powertrain and vehicle design. The Lucid Air Grand Touring is the longest-range variant of Lucid’s flagship sedan. Its powertrain delivers up to 831 horsepower, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, and reaches a top speed of 270 km/h.
Key to the record run was the advanced battery architecture. SAMSUNG SDI’s 21700 cylindrical cells offer high energy density and fast-charging capability, enabling the vehicle to recover up to 400 kilometers of range in just 16 minutes. This performance is achieved through optimized cell chemistry, thermal management, and ultra-fast charging integration.
SAMSUNG SDI and Lucid have maintained a strategic collaboration since 2016, beginning with the development of the Lucid Air Dream Edition and extending to subsequent Lucid models.
“With SAMSUNG SDI’s cylindrical battery powering the world’s longest-range vehicle, we have proven our technological prowess,” said a SAMSUNG SDI official. “We will strengthen our partnership with Lucid to expand our global market share and accelerate the development of products that combine differentiated performance and safety.”
Lucid Motors continues to advance electric vehicle technology through its Arizona-based, vertically integrated manufacturing facility. The partnership with SAMSUNG SDI highlights ongoing efforts to push the boundaries of driving range, charging speed, and overall battery performance in the electric vehicle market.
