Skeleton Technologies has been honored with the 2025 Louis Schwitzer Award for its significant contribution to the development of the hybrid power unit Energy Storage System (ESS) for the NTT IndyCar Series. The award was presented to Raoul Fernandes, Senior Project Manager at Skeleton Technologies, along with key contributors from Honda Racing Corporation, EMPEL, Ilmor Engineering, INDYCAR, and Dana Inc. This collaborative effort has introduced a groundbreaking technology that is reshaping the motorsports industry.

The jury recognized Skeleton Technologies for developing a novel hybrid energy storage system that leverages a low-voltage energy solution based on supercapacitors. This innovative system debuted competitively in July 2024 at the Mid-Ohio race and has since been implemented across all events of the IndyCar season, including the forthcoming 109th Indy 500.

Skeleton Technologies played a crucial role by designing and supplying the energy storage unit, which utilizes proprietary supercapacitor technology. This system provides ultra-fast charging and power delivery, essential for high-performance racing. The technology enhances efficiency and responsiveness while promoting a more sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to motorsport.

“It’s a great honor to be part of the team recognized with such a prestigious award. We are proud that Skeleton has become a driving force behind a major technological shift in racing — and we believe this is just the beginning,” commented Raoul Fernandes, Skeleton representative and award recipient.

The Louis Schwitzer Award is a highly esteemed accolade in automotive engineering, established in 1967. It is awarded annually before the Indianapolis 500 to acknowledge technical innovations that demonstrate engineering excellence and practical application on the racetrack. The Indiana Section of SAE International organizes the award, with support from Cummins and Valvoline. Named after Louis Schwitzer, a pioneering engineer and race car driver, the award celebrates significant advancements in motorsport technology.

Skeleton Technologies’ achievement underscores the company’s leadership in energy storage solutions and its commitment to advancing hybrid technologies in competitive racing. The recognition highlights the collaborative effort and technical expertise that have contributed to the ongoing evolution of the IndyCar hybrid platform.
