CATL, the world’s leading power battery manufacturer, has launched a new battery solution specifically designed for electric buses. The CATL Tectrans Bus Edition, introduced at a recent launch event, offers an unprecedented service life of up to 15 years or 1.5 million kilometers, with a warranty of 10 years or 1 million kilometers.
The new battery has an energy density of 175 Wh/kg, which CATL claims is the highest in the electric bus industry. This high energy density could potentially lead to increased range or reduced battery weight for electric buses, improving overall efficiency.
Durability is a key feature of the new battery, with CATL stating that it has achieved an IP69 rating and can withstand 72 hours of submersion in water. This rugged design is particularly important for the demanding conditions often found in public transport vehicles.
CATL has already secured partnerships with 13 vehicle manufacturers, including major players such as Yutong Bus, Golden Dragon and Dongfeng Motor. The company reports that the Tectrans Bus Edition is currently being integrated into 80 different bus models.
The launch of this specialized battery solution for electric buses demonstrates CATL’s growing focus on the commercial vehicle sector. The move follows the company’s launch of its Tectrans commercial vehicle battery brand in July, which included two L-Series batteries designed for logistics and distribution applications.
CATL’s dominant position in the global power battery market, with a 37.6% share from January to July 2024, according to SNE Research, positions it well to make a significant impact in the commercial electric vehicle sector. In China, the company’s market share reached 46.2% from January to August 2024, according to the China Automotive Battery Innovation.
As electric buses continue to play a critical role in sustainable urban transportation, CATL’s new long-life battery solution could potentially accelerate the adoption of electric buses by addressing battery longevity concerns and reducing total cost of ownership for fleet operators.
