Nemaska Lithium stands as a significant Canadian mining and processing company, specializing in producing high-quality, battery-grade lithium materials. Operating from Quebec, Canada, the company manages one of North America’s largest hard rock lithium mines while maintaining a state-of-the-art lithium salts processing facility. The company focuses on sustainable lithium production practices, utilizing renewable energy sources and implementing efficient water management systems.

Equal ownership between Investissement Québec and Livent Corporation positions Nemaska Lithium strategically in the North American battery supply chain. The company’s integration of mining and processing capabilities enables it to deliver consistent, high-quality lithium products essential for electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing.

Battery Technology

Nemaska Lithium’s primary focus centers on producing battery-grade lithium hydroxide and lithium carbonate, crucial components for lithium-ion battery production. The company’s integrated approach begins at its Whabouchi mine, where lithium-rich spodumene is extracted, then processed at their advanced Bécancour facility.

The company’s processing methods incorporate innovative technologies that maximize efficiency while minimizing environmental impact. Their facilities operate using hydroelectric power, substantially reducing carbon emissions compared to traditional lithium processing methods. The Bécancour conversion facility, set to become Canada’s first lithium hydroxide conversion plant, represents a significant advancement in North American battery material production.

The processing technology implemented by Nemaska Lithium allows for nearly 100% water reuse, demonstrating their commitment to sustainable practices. This approach not only conserves resources but also positions their products favorably in markets demanding environmentally responsible battery materials. Their production capabilities support the manufacturing of high-performance batteries for EVs, energy storage systems, and consumer electronics.

Recent Projects

In 2023, Nemaska Lithium initiated construction of its processing plant in Bécancour, Quebec. This facility, scheduled for completion by 2025, will create 800 construction jobs and maintain 200 permanent positions once operational. The company also secured a significant long-term supply agreement with Ford Motor Company, establishing an eleven-year commitment to provide lithium hydroxide for EV battery production.

Investors

Current ownership of Nemaska Lithium is equally divided between two major stakeholders. Investissement Québec, representing the Quebec government, holds 50% ownership and has demonstrated ongoing support through substantial investments, including a $250 million contribution in 2023. Livent Corporation, a global leader in lithium technology, owns the remaining 50% after acquiring The Pallinghurst Group’s stake in 2022.
