Battery Technology

Produces high-capacity lithium-ion batteries using SK On’s proprietary technology. Designs incorporate NMC (Lithium/Nickel/Cobalt/Manganese) cathodes, graphite anodes, silicon separators, and specialized electrolytes. Manufacturing involves material mixing, coating, cutting, drying, stacking, and rigorous testing to deliver over 40 GWh annually per facility, focusing on safety, energy density, efficient charging, and consistent production standards.

Advanced lithium-ion battery cells for Ford and Lincoln electric vehicles, featuring high-capacity NMC cathodes, graphite anodes, silicon separators, and specialized electrolytes, optimized for safety, rapid charging, and longevity.

Recent Projects

In 2024 secured a $9.63 billion loan from the U.S. Department of Energy to build three battery plants. Partnered with Tennessee College of Applied Technology and Elizabethtown Community and Technical College on employee training programs. Production at Kentucky and Tennessee sites begins in 2025 with a goal of carbon neutrality via 100% renewable energy.

Investors

Backed equally by Ford Motor Company (50.0%) and SK On (50.0%). Received a $9.6B loan from the U.S. Department of Energy. SK Battery America and Ford Motor Company made additional contributions of $712M and $560M, respectively.
