Company Overview

IPG Photonics is a leading developer and manufacturer of high-performance fiber lasers, amplifiers, and laser-based automated systems, headquartered in Marlborough, Massachusetts. The company’s mission is to transform manufacturing across industries1 materials processing, medical, telecommunications, and e-mobility1 by delivering reliable, energy-efficient laser solutions that improve quality, reduce costs, and maximize productivity.

Battery Technology

IPG Photonics’ core technology comprises high-precision fiber laser systems for lithium-ion battery production. For cell fabrication, lasers perform electrode foil cutting and notching, tab-to-foil and foil stack welding, cell case sealing, and safety valve welding; emerging laser drying solutions provide energy-efficient, non-contact electrode coating drying. In module and pack assembly, laser busbar welding, dual-beam and wobble welding join cells into modules and trays with high strength, conductivity, and repeatability. Its patented real-time, non-destructive laser weld measurement technology delivers 100% inline inspection without increasing cycle time.

Products

Recent products include the Rack-Integrated (RI) Laser Platform—reducing footprint by 60% with next-generation, humidity-resistant pump diodes; the LDD-1000-DS Deep Weld Imaging System—offering real-time, high-resolution weld analysis up to 50 mm penetration; and the EV-Cube Battery Welding Systems—automated, configurable laser welding solutions for mass production of EV battery modules and packs.

Recent Projects

IPG Photonics’ notable projects include a 2016 acquisition of Menara Networks for optical telecom systems; a 2023 strategic partnership with Miller Electric to develop handheld laser welding solutions; collaborations with Lincoln Electric on robotic and hybrid arc-laser welding for automotive and aerospace; a research partnership with University College London under an IPG Photonics/Royal Academy of Engineering fellowship to advance laser-material interaction studies; and deployments of real-time dual-beam and LDD welding technologies in e-mobility manufacturing, plus laser curing solutions for powder-coated parts.

Investors

IPG Photonics is publicly traded on NASDAQ under the ticker IPGP. Major institutional investors include The Vanguard Group, BlackRock Fund Advisors, Massachusetts Financial Services, and State Street Global Advisors. Insiders hold 20.0% of shares; the remainder is publicly held.
