Company Overview

Mana Battery, headquartered in Boulder, Colorado, is an advanced battery technology company dedicated to pioneering the next generation of sodium-ion batteries. Founded in 2023 as a spin-off from the laboratory of Chunmei Ban at the University of Colorado Boulder, its mission is to advance sustainable energy storage by developing cost-effective, safe, and high-performing battery solutions that compete with traditional lithium-ion technology. Mana leverages domestically available minerals to enhance supply chain resilience and reduce reliance on imported materials.

Battery Technology

Mana Battery’s core innovations include proprietary sodium-ion electrolytes featuring fire-extinguishing molecules to prevent thermal runaway, optimized for multiple cell chemistries to extend calendar and cycle life, and high-energy, anode-free cell designs that eliminate costly components while achieving energy densities surpassing lithium iron phosphate batteries. These technologies reduce production costs to 35–75% of lithium-ion equivalents and are scalable through partnerships with established manufacturers.

Products

High-energy sodium-ion battery cells with patented electrolytes incorporating fire-extinguishing molecules and anode-free architectures delivering superior energy density (Wh/L) compared to LFP, targeting applications in grid energy storage, low-cost electric vehicles, wearables, and IoT devices.

Recent Projects

Secured $132,505 via the Lab Venture Challenge; received grants from the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade’s Advanced Industries Program and the University of Colorado’s Chancellor’s Innovation Fund; signed its first memorandum of understanding with a customer to establish supply chain partnerships; partnered with Black & Veatch to design and construct a commercial-scale lithium hydroxide refinery.

Investors

Mana Battery has received backing from Buff Gold Ventures (with a board observer role), grants from the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade, and the University of Colorado’s Chancellor’s Innovation Fund. It also benefits from advisory support by Ed Williams (Sionic Energy) and independent director Doug Campbell (formerly of Solid Power).
