Company Overview

Sepion Technologies is a California-based materials company specializing in advanced separator and electrolyte solutions for lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries. Founded in 2015, the company develops innovative materials that enhance battery safety, performance, and cost-effectiveness for electric vehicle applications. The company operates from a 25,000-square-foot facility in Alameda, California, where they conduct research, development, and pilot production of their battery components.

Battery Technology

Sepion Technologies’ core innovations include a coated separator technology that filters ions at the atomic level, allowing lithium ions to pass while blocking harmful transition metals, resulting in up to 5% greater volumetric energy density and a ~10 kg vehicle mass reduction. Their non-flammable liquid electrolyte features a flash point >70 °C and a self-extinguishing time 25× faster than standard electrolytes. They leverage advanced materials science and machine learning and operate a facility equipped with a dry room for 2 Ah and 20 Ah cell assembly and a 330 mm slot-die coater producing 500,000 m² of coated separators and 1 MWh of prototype cells annually.

Products

Sepion offers specialized coated separators and non-flammable liquid electrolytes for lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries. Their facility produces 330 mm wide coated separator sheets with an annual capacity of 500,000 m² and prototype 2 Ah and 20 Ah cells totaling 1 MWh annually.

Recent Projects

In 2024, Sepion secured a $17.5 million grant to build a lithium-ion battery separator manufacturing facility in West Sacramento, California, slated for 2027 production: 50 tons of proprietary polymer and 50 million m² of coated separators annually to power 50,000 electric vehicles, in collaboration with local workforce development organizations. The company also achieved UN/DOT 38.3 safety certification for its products.

Investors

Sepion Technologies has secured funding from Fine Structure Ventures (which led a $16M Series A round in 2021), Solvay Ventures, Alumni Ventures, 11.2 Capital, ACVC Partners, Calm Ventures, and Creative Ventures. The company has also received grants from the California Energy Commission and the U.S. Department of Energy.
