Company Overview

Tiamat Energy, established in 2017 as a spin-off from the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and RS2E network university units, develops and manufactures sodium-ion batteries for mobility and stationary energy storage, focusing on sustainable, cost-effective alternatives to lithium and positioning itself for large-scale European production.

Battery Technology

Tiamat’s sodium-ion battery technology includes two generations: Gen1 offers 90–110 Wh/kg capacity, 30C continuous and 100C pulse discharge, and over 5,000 cycles for high-power applications; Gen2 delivers 140–160 Wh/kg for medium energy density. Both use abundant materials with no lithium or cobalt, feature superior safety and fast charging, and are manufactured using advanced processes for consistent quality in mobility (hybrid vehicles, fuel cells) and stationary (UPS, data centers) applications.

Products

Gen1 sodium-ion cells: 90–110 Wh/kg, 30C continuous/100C pulse discharge, >5,000 cycles; Gen2 sodium-ion cells: 140–160 Wh/kg, optimized for cost-effective medium energy density.

Recent Projects

In early 2024, Tiamat secured €30 million for a planned 5 GWh gigafactory near Amiens, France, aiming for 700 MWh annual capacity by 2025 and seeking an additional €120 million; partnered with LEAD for large-scale production transition.

Investors

Investors include Stellantis Ventures, Arkema, MBDA and Bpifrance.
