Dürr, a global leader in mechanical and plant engineering, has launched its latest innovation in battery manufacturing technology: the GigaCoater™. This advanced simultaneous two-sided coating machine aims to enhance the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of battery electrode production.
Developed for battery cell manufacturers, the GigaCoater expands Dürr’s existing portfolio of coating technologies. The machine offers increased substrate width capabilities of up to 1,200 mm and higher coating speeds while maintaining automotive-grade quality standards.
The GigaCoater features a streamlined configuration with a straight-path product flow and two coating stations combined in a single location. This design, along with a non-contact flotation drying system, results in a more compact manufacturing footprint and lower energy consumption. The coating process employs a slot-die against a backing roll, followed by a tensioned-web-over-slot-die (TWOSD) method, enabling simultaneous two-sided coating of the foil in one pass.
The machine’s simplified layout contributes to operational cost savings through reduced energy consumption, decreased coil handling, lower personnel requirements, minimized material waste, and a smaller space requirement. The technology also improves product quality by eliminating edge curl and ensuring uniform drying on both sides of the electrode.
The GigaCoater complements Dürr’s existing line of simultaneous two-sided coating machines, which includes the PilotCoater and ProCoater. These machines cater to various production scales, from ongoing process development to large-scale lithium-ion battery manufacturing.
Dürr’s introduction of the GigaCoater reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to advance battery production technology and address the evolving needs of the expanding electric vehicle market.
