Grafintec Oy is a Finnish graphite technology company dedicated to developing crucial graphite resources and production capabilities to support Finland’s and Europe’s journey toward self-sufficient battery manufacturing. The company is strategically positioned within the Nordic battery manufacturing hub, with its headquarters in Vaasa, Finland. Grafintec emphasizes sustainable and responsible mining and production practices for graphite materials, which are essential to the battery value chain. Its core activities include the production of natural graphite, implementing circular economy and recycling strategies, and manufacturing graphite anodes for the rapidly expanding lithium-ion battery industry. Wholly owned by Beowulf Mining plc, Grafintec aims to fill a significant gap in Europe’s battery material supply chain.
Battery Technology
Grafintec’s primary technological contribution to the battery market is through the production of coated spherical graphite, a high-performance anode material vital for lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles and energy storage systems. The company specializes in processes like spheronization, which shapes graphite particles for optimal battery performance, and thermal cleaning, achieving purities over 99.95% required for anodes. Grafintec sources its materials from both natural flake graphite, particularly from its Finnish Aitolampi deposit, and through recycled graphite inputs, promoting sustainability and circular economy principles.
The company is developing a Graphite Anode Materials Plant (GAMP) to produce coated spherical graphite. This material significantly enhances battery energy density, charge rate, and overall lifecycle. Grafintec is committed to sustainable processing methods, which include environmentally friendly and non-hazardous purification and shaping processes designed for cost efficiency and minimal ecological impact. The company’s R&D efforts extend to innovations in wastewater valorization, chemical recovery, and aiming for zero-waste industrial operations. Grafintec’s focus is exclusively on producing graphite anode materials, not on developing battery cells or new battery chemistries.
Recent Projects
In July 2025, Grafintec secured a site reservation in Kotka for its Graphite Anode Material Factory (GAMP), a significant step toward its operational goals. A Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) for GAMP, released in May 2025, demonstrated strong economic viability and growth potential, reporting a €924 million net present value and a 37% internal rate of return over 25 years. In June 2025, Grafintec received an extension for its mining exploration license for Pitkäjärvi (Aitolampi), reinforcing its upstream raw material strategy. Additionally, in May 2025, the company submitted an extension application for the Rääpysjärvi mining exploration area. Grafintec’s involvement in the Bioboost project in March 2025 further underlines its commitment to sustainable innovation, exploring the use of lignin.
Investors
Grafintec Oy is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Beowulf Mining plc, a publicly listed UK-Swedish mining company. Beowulf Mining serves as Grafintec’s sole shareholder, channeling all investments into Grafintec.
