Li-Cycle Holdings Corp. has announced a new exclusive partnership with a leading automotive original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to recycle lithium-ion battery materials at its Germany Spoke. This collaboration marks an expansion of Li-Cycle’s commercial operations within the European Union (EU).
Under the terms of the agreement, feedstock from an EU-based electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing facility will be directed to Li-Cycle’s Germany Spoke. This partnership underscores Li-Cycle’s continued efforts to enhance its recycling capabilities and service quality for global EV OEM partners. By utilizing its advanced recycling technology, Li-Cycle aims to support the sustainable supply of critical battery materials essential for the EV industry.
Ajay Kochhar, President and CEO of Li-Cycle, stated, “We are pleased to support the recycling of lithium-ion batteries and manufacturing scrap from across the EU. This partnership with a top-tier EV manufacturer is a crucial addition to our Germany Spoke, helping us provide a local and sustainable source of critical battery materials. Our commitment remains strong in delivering high-quality services and products as we expand our Spoke network to meet growing demands.”
Li-Cycle’s Germany Spoke will process battery manufacturing scrap and end-of-life batteries to produce black mass, a substance containing valuable metals such as lithium, nickel, and cobalt. The company plans to further develop its Hub facilities to convert black mass into battery-grade materials like lithium carbonate, thereby contributing to a closed-loop battery supply chain.
Founded in 2016, Li-Cycle is dedicated to recovering essential battery materials to support a clean energy future. The company employs its patented Spoke & Hub TechnologiesTM to efficiently recycle various types of lithium-ion batteries. Li-Cycle’s mission focuses on creating a domestic supply chain for critical battery materials, reducing reliance on raw material mining, and promoting environmental sustainability within the EV sector.
This latest partnership reinforces Li-Cycle’s position in the EU market and highlights its ability to provide scalable and sustainable recycling solutions to major players in the electric vehicle industry. As the demand for lithium-ion batteries continues to grow, Li-Cycle’s expanding footprint aims to meet the increasing need for recycled battery materials, supporting the broader goals of sustainability and resource efficiency in the global EV market.
