On April 11, 2025, MAN Truck & Bus commenced its battery production operations at the Nuremberg facility, an event attended by Bavarian Minister President Dr. Markus Söder and State Minister Hubert Aiwanger. This marks the Munich-based commercial vehicle manufacturer’s initial expansion of battery production in Nuremberg.
The investment in MAN’s battery production at the Nuremberg site has increased from 100 million euros to approximately 250 million euros, bringing the total investment to nearly half a billion euros. This expansion is expected to create around 400 sustainable jobs within the battery sector at the location.
In addition to the initial 100 million euros allocated to the production facility, MAN plans to invest an additional 150 million euros in the coming years. These funds will be used to advance battery technology and enhance the value-added processes. The production will include not only battery packs composed of multiple modules but also the modules themselves, which integrate several battery cells for next-generation batteries.
The additional 150 million euros in investments will be partially supported by subsidies, with around 18 million euros expected from both the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK) and the Free State of Bavaria. Furthermore, Bavaria will contribute an extra 30 million euros to support ongoing research and development in battery technology at the MAN site.
MAN CEO Alexander Vlaskamp stated, “This is a historic day for MAN. With the start of battery production, the company that invented the diesel engine is entering a new era. Today we announced another milestone in the transformation towards climate-friendly drives: MAN will invest a further 150 million euros in the expansion of battery production for future battery generations in Nuremberg.”
Dr. Markus Söder, Minister President of Bavaria, added, “Electromobility made in Bavaria: this is a milestone for MAN and Bavaria as an industrial location! This strengthens the location, secures and creates jobs, and enhances international competitiveness. Bavaria is and will remain an automotive state.”
This battery production line is the second new production line opened in Nuremberg this year, following a significant 250 million euro investment in the latest generation of MAN diesel engines for the new D30 PowerLion driveline. Projections indicate that by 2030, nearly half of the trucks in Europe and about 90% of city buses will be delivered with zero-emission drive systems.
Production of MAN’s electric trucks and battery packs in three different configurations is set to begin in June. The current production capacity stands at 50,000 battery packs per year, with the potential to expand to 100,000 units based on demand. MAN emphasizes quality and safety, with each battery pack undergoing comprehensive end-of-line testing, including software, electrical conditions, and leakage tests, ensuring traceability for up to fifteen years.
These initiatives reflect MAN’s commitment to sustainability and innovation within the automotive industry.
