PT Indonesia BTR New Energy Material, a subsidiary of BTR New Material Group Co., Ltd., stands as a significant manufacturer of anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. The company’s state-of-the-art facility in Kendal Industrial Park, Indonesia, represents BTR’s first international expansion outside China. With an initial investment of $478 million, the plant launched in August 2024, featuring an annual production capacity of 80,000 tons of anode materials. The company serves major global manufacturers, including BYD, SK Group, LG, and Samsung, strengthening the international supply chain for lithium-ion batteries. This strategic location in Indonesia positions the company to meet growing demand across Asia, Europe, and North America.

Battery Technology

The company specializes in producing advanced anode materials essential for lithium-ion battery production. Their technology focuses on developing and manufacturing various types of materials, including natural graphite, artificial graphite, and silicon-based components. These materials are designed to enhance battery performance through improved energy density, faster charging capabilities, and extended cycle life.

The manufacturing process incorporates sophisticated techniques for both synthetic and natural graphite processing. The facility utilizes an optimized blend of these materials to achieve cost-effective production while maintaining high-performance standards. This approach ensures the delivery of superior anode materials that meet the strict requirements of electric vehicle manufacturers and energy storage system producers.

The second phase of development, scheduled to begin in late 2024 with an additional $299 million investment, will double the production capacity to 160,000 tons by early 2025. This expansion will make the facility the largest anode material production site outside China, incorporating advanced processing technologies and quality control systems.

Recent Projects

In August 2024, Indonesian President Joko Widodo inaugurated the company’s anode factory in Kendal Industrial Park. This facility will create 7,800 jobs, with 94% of positions allocated to local workers. The project includes plans for complete transition to green power operations, demonstrating the company’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing practices.

The company has also initiated agreements with Syrah Resources for graphite feedstock supply, ensuring stable raw material access for their production needs. Additionally, BTR is developing a facility in Morocco to comply with U.S. sourcing regulations.

Investors

PT Indonesia BTR New Energy Material operates as a joint venture between BTR New Material Group Co., Ltd. (70% stake) and Stellar Investment, a Tsingshan subsidiary (30% stake). The total investment across both development phases amounts to $777 million, reflecting strong financial backing from both parent companies. This partnership combines BTR’s technical expertise with Tsingshan’s industrial experience in Indonesia.
