RE.LION.BAT. Circular GmbH represents a strategic collaboration between mobility specialist LUEG and the DEPPE Group, established to create an efficient value chain for lithium battery recycling. The company merges LUEG’s extensive automotive expertise with DEPPE’s proven track record in waste management, particularly in battery logistics and disposal. Based in Meppen, Germany, RE.LION.AT. Circular GmbH is building a modern recycling facility designed to process up to 60,000 tons of lithium-ion batteries annually, serving both automotive and consumer electronics sectors. Their approach combines efficient logistics, expert dismantling, and advanced recycling processes to support sustainable practices in the battery industry.

Battery Technology

The company’s primary focus lies in developing efficient recycling solutions for lithium-ion batteries through a multi-stage process. Their technology enables the safe dismantling and discharging of various battery types, from electric vehicle batteries to those used in consumer electronics. The recycling process recovers valuable materials including lithium, nickel, cobalt, and graphite, achieving recovery rates of up to 96%.

The Meppen facility incorporates automation throughout its operations, processing four tons of batteries per hour. The technology specifically targets the production of “black mass,” an essential intermediate product in battery recycling. This process allows for the extraction of aluminum, copper, iron, and plastics, making these materials available for reuse in new battery production.

RE.LION.BAT.’s technical infrastructure includes specialized storage facilities designed for safe battery handling, advanced dismantling equipment, and processing systems that meet strict environmental standards. Their second-life program evaluates batteries for potential reuse in less demanding applications before recycling, maximizing resource efficiency.

Recent Projects

As of early 2024, RE.LION.BAT. Circular GmbH is constructing its recycling facility in Meppen, scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2024. The plant represents a significant advancement in European battery recycling capabilities, with an initial capacity of 20,000 tons annually, expanding to 60,000 tons in subsequent phases. The project incorporates URT-designed automated systems for efficient material processing and recovery.

Investors

The company operates through investment from two main partners. LUEG, which manages 33 locations across Germany and Switzerland, brings extensive automotive industry experience and a wide service network. The DEPPE Group contributes its expertise in waste management and battery logistics, supported by years of experience in handling hazardous materials. Both partners maintain active roles in directing company operations and strategic development.
