Svolt Energy, a battery manufacturer that originated from Great Wall Motor, has announced a new fast-charging electric vehicle (EV) battery capable of significantly reducing charging times. Unveiled at the company’s 5th Battery Day event in Chengdu, Sichuan province, the Fengxing Short Blade Battery can charge from 10% to 80% state of charge (SOC) in just 8.5 minutes.
The Fengxing battery features a 6C charging multiplier and an energy density of 185 Wh/kg. In battery terminology, a ‘C’ rating indicates the rate at which a battery can be charged or discharged relative to its maximum capacity. A 6C rating means the battery can theoretically be fully charged in one-sixth of an hour, or approximately 10 minutes, enhancing charging efficiency for EV users.
Powered by Svolt’s third-generation short blade cells, the Fengxing battery utilizes high-energy cathode and anode materials to achieve its performance. In addition to the ultra-fast charging version, Svolt has developed a long-life variant of the Fengxing battery. This version offers a lifespan of 15 years or 600,000 kilometers (approximately 373,000 miles) and a cell cycle life exceeding 5,000 cycles, providing durability alongside efficiency.
Currently, the highest charging multiplier in batteries used by production vehicles is 5C, as seen in models like Li Auto’s Li Mega multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and select vehicles from Zeekr. Industry leaders such as CATL and BYD are reportedly developing 6C fast-charging technologies, indicating a broader industry shift toward faster charging solutions.
Svolt also introduced its first battery designed specifically for off-road vehicles. Capable of operating in temperatures ranging from -43°C to 60°C (-45.4°F to 140°F), this battery offers reliable performance in extreme climates. It has a pulse discharge power of 5C at -20°C (-4°F), supports 800V charging, and offers a capacity of up to 59 kWh. This off-road battery is already implemented in Great Wall Motor’s Tank 500 Hi-4Z model, which launched on January 1.
For the commercial vehicle sector, Svolt unveiled new batteries with options catering to both fast-charging needs and extended life spans. The fast-charging commercial battery boasts a capacity of 91.4 kWh and supports a 4C charging multiplier, allowing it to charge from 10% to 80% SOC in 14 minutes. The long-life version has a capacity of 95.7 kWh with a 3C charging multiplier and comes with an 8-year or 1.5-million-kilometer (approximately 932,000 miles) warranty, offering substantial longevity for commercial applications.
During the event, Svolt celebrated the production of its one-millionth battery pack at its Chengdu manufacturing facility. From January to November, the company shipped 5.8 GWh of batteries to overseas customers, accounting for 27% of its total shipments in that period. In November alone, Svolt’s battery shipments in China reached 2.34 GWh, securing the fifth position in the market with a 3.49% share, according to data from the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance.
These developments underscore Svolt’s commitment to advancing battery technology and meeting the growing demands of the EV market, both in China and internationally.
