Allegro Energy is an Australian cleantech company focused on developing advanced, sustainable battery technologies. The company aims to accelerate the global transition to a world powered by abundant, clean energy by making fossil fuels obsolete through innovative, scalable energy storage solutions. Headquartered in Thornton, New South Wales, Allegro Energy provides long-duration energy storage solutions for utility-scale applications and electric transportation.

The company has received industry recognition, appearing on The Australian’s “Green Power Players 2023” list. Origin Energy holds a 5% equity stake and collaborates on pilot projects. Allegro Energy also benefits from government support, including an AU$1.85 million federal grant under the Industry Growth Program and an AU$2.1 million NSW Government Clean Technology R&D grant. These initiatives position Allegro Energy as an innovator in clean energy technologies.

Battery Technology

Allegro Energy’s primary innovation is its proprietary Microemulsion Flow Battery (MeFB) technology, which utilizes a water-based microemulsion electrolyte. This technology offers several advantages: it is non-flammable and non-toxic, made from common, recyclable materials, and avoids the use of rare earth elements or hazardous substances. MeFBs are optimized for long-duration energy storage, providing continuous energy for 4 to over 24 hours, exceeding the duration of conventional lithium-ion batteries.

The microemulsion electrolyte platform is versatile, compatible with various battery chemistries, including lithium-ion, sodium-ion, magnesium-ion, and aluminum-ion, as well as supercapacitors. This flexibility expands its scientific and commercial applications. These batteries are designed for utility-scale deployment, offering durability and ease of maintenance. In parallel, Allegro develops supercapacitors using the same water-based electrolyte, providing rapid charging and discharging capabilities for applications requiring short bursts of high power, while maintaining safety and recyclability.

Recent projects

In partnership with Origin Energy, Allegro Energy is deploying Australia’s first domestically manufactured microemulsion flow battery at the Eraring Power Station. This 100 kW/800 kWh system, designed for eight hours of dispatch, serves as a demonstration model prior to scaling up. Allegro also secured a U.S. patent protecting its microemulsion electrolyte chemistry in 2024. In early 2025, the company received an additional AU$1.85 million federal grant to accelerate manufacturing scale-up and reduce production costs, following its AU$17.5 million Series A round in late 2024.

Investors

Allegro Energy successfully closed an AU$17.5 million Series A funding round in late 2024. Leading the investment was The Grantham Foundation, a global climate philanthropy. Other significant investors include Origin Energy, which holds a strategic 5% equity stake and collaborates on pilot projects, and Lightbank, a U.S.-based venture capital firm. Additionally, Australian venture firms Melt Ventures and Impact Ventures have invested in Allegro Energy. The company has also received approximately AU$4 million in federal and state government grants for clean technology research and development and manufacturing expansion.
