Altech Batteries Ltd is an Australian-based battery technology company developing and commercializing innovative solutions for grid energy storage and lithium-ion battery markets. With a focus on sustainable and high-performance technologies, Altech operates with key development activities in Germany. The company seeks to provide solutions that address current limitations in battery technology, particularly concerning material sourcing, safety, and longevity.

By focusing on both novel battery chemistries and advanced battery materials, Altech aims to contribute to the electrification transition. The company’s strategy includes developing and manufacturing its technologies in strategic locations, positioning itself within the battery value chain from materials innovation to finished battery systems.

Battery Technology

Altech Batteries develops two primary types of battery technology. One is the CERENERGY® Sodium Chloride Solid-State Battery, developed in a joint venture with German research institute Fraunhofer IKTS. This solid-state battery uses common table salt and a ceramic electrolyte, eliminating the need for lithium, cobalt, graphite, and copper. Designed for grid energy storage, it is fire and explosion-proof, offers a lifespan over 15 years, and operates across extreme temperatures. The materials are highly recyclable, contributing to a favorable environmental profile and potentially lower production costs compared to some traditional battery types.

The second technology is Silumina Anodes™, a nano-coating application designed for lithium-ion battery anodes. This technology involves applying a high-purity alumina coating on silicon and graphite particles. This process enhances battery performance by increasing energy capacity, improving longevity, and reducing issues like first-cycle capacity loss. Targeting electric vehicles and high-performance electronics, this material technology significantly boosts the energy density achievable in lithium-ion batteries.

Recent Projects

In recent developments, Altech Batteries has secured environmental and construction permits for its CERENERGY® production facility in Saxony, Germany, as of March 2025. This marks a step towards commencing site preparation and construction for the 120 MWh solid-state battery plant. The company also recently achieved a significant improvement in the performance of its Silumina Anodes™ technology, described in May 2025 news, enhancing battery cyclability and energy density in silicon anodes. Altech also showcased its CERENERGY® technology at Hannover Messe 2025, engaging with industry stakeholders and generating interest in its solid-state battery solution.

Investors

Altech Batteries has attracted investment from several entities. Notable shareholders include MAA Group Berhad, Deutsche Balaton AG, and BNP Paribas Noms Pty Ltd. The company’s investor base is spread across various categories, including the general public, private companies, institutions, and VC/PE firms. In March 2025, Altech announced a funding agreement with major shareholder Deutsche Balaton AG, subject to shareholder approval, to support its commercialization efforts.
