Chinese automaker BYD has reached a new production milestone, rolling its 16 millionth new energy vehicle (NEV) off the assembly line on April 17, 2026. This vehicle marks the first unit of the second-generation Denza D9 multi-purpose vehicle (MPV). The achievement comes just 120 days after BYD celebrated its 15 millionth NEV on December 18, 2025.

The second-generation Denza D9 began pre-sales on March 29, offering six trim levels. Both the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery electric (BEV) versions are priced identically, with prices ranging from 389,800 to 489,800 yuan (approximately $57,130 to $71,760). The model features BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery and an advanced fast-charging system that can replenish battery charge from 10 percent to 70 percent in five minutes, and reach 97 percent in nine minutes.

All Denza D9 models now come equipped with BYD’s God’s Eye 5.0 smart driving assistance system, designed to enhance safety and convenience for modern business and family use. BYD has also announced plans to offer the God’s Eye 5.0 software update to existing D9 vehicles fitted with the appropriate hardware, ensuring broader access to the enhanced features.

Headquartered in Shenzhen, BYD has experienced rapid NEV growth since its first model in December 2008. The company’s pace accelerated notably after it reached one million NEVs in May 2021. It hit the 10 million mark on November 18, 2024, and then achieved 15 million units just 13 months later. Despite this long-term momentum, BYD has reported a slowing growth rate in recent months.

In March 2026, the company sold 300,222 NEVs, representing a 57.9 percent increase compared with February but a 20.5 percent decline year-on-year. This variation underscores shifting market dynamics as BYD continues its push in the global electric vehicle sector.
