Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) and BHP Group Limited (BHP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore collaboration in battery technology and electrification for mining applications. Under the agreement, the two companies will evaluate advanced battery development for mining equipment and locomotives, rapid charging infrastructure, and energy storage systems. They will also investigate battery recycling solutions tailored to BHP’s mining operations.
CATL, recognized as a global leader in new-energy technologies, intends to apply its expertise in cutting-edge battery solutions to support the mining industry’s transition to lower-carbon operations. The partnership aligns with BHP’s target of achieving net-zero operational greenhouse gas emissions (Scopes 1 and 2) from its operated assets by 2050. By combining CATL’s innovations in energy storage and electrification with BHP’s extensive mining capabilities, the collaboration aims to identify practical pathways for reducing carbon emissions at scale.
A key focus of the MOU is advancing circular economy principles within the mining supply chain. The companies will explore how BHP’s copper operations can be integrated into efficient battery recycling processes, creating more sustainable value chains and minimizing end-of-life waste. This approach is expected to drive improvements in resource efficiency and support both firms’ environmental objectives.
