Chinese EV Makers See Varied September Sales Growth
In September, most Chinese EV makers posted year-over-year global sales increases: Nio (+64%), Xpeng (+95%), Leapmotor (+97%) and Xiaomi (+197%) led growth, while BYD (-6%) and Li Auto (-37%) saw declines ahead of Golden Week.

In September, most Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers reported year-over-year gains in global sales, though a few saw declines. Nio led the pack with a 64% increase compared with September 2024, while Xpeng nearly doubled its deliveries, up 95%. Leapmotor posted a 97% rise, and Xiaomi’s volumes more than tripled, delivering over 40,000 units versus 13,559 a year earlier. BYD and Li Auto were the exceptions, with BYD down 6% and Li Auto off 37% year-over-year. Automakers accelerated shipments ahead of China’s Golden Week holiday, which runs from October 1 to 8, and an adjusted working day on September 28.

The data, compiled by China EV DataTracker from company reports, covers global sales of new energy passenger vehicles, including battery electrics and plug-in hybrids. BYD Group sold 393,060 units in September, up 5.8% month-on-month but down 5.9% year-on-year. From January through September, BYD delivered 3,223,475 vehicles, a 17.8% increase, though its full-year target was recently lowered to 4.6 million units.

Geely Group achieved 165,201 EV sales, rising 12.1% from August and 81.3% year-over-year. January-through-September volumes reached 1,167,823, up 113.9%, largely driven by its Galaxy brand, which surged 316% in September to 120,868 units. SAIC-GM-Wuling’s joint venture sold 100,593 vehicles, up 35.9% month-on-month.

Leapmotor delivered 66,657 units in September, up 16.8% from August and 97.4% year-over-year, bringing its January-through-September total to 395,516, a 128.8% gain. Huawei’s HIMA alliance sold 52,916 vehicles, up 18.7% month-on-month and 32.5% annually, with nine-month volumes up 113.7% at 350,101 units. Great Wall Motor’s sales grew 22.6% from August and 52.5% year-over-year to 45,961 units, while Xpeng’s 41,581 deliveries reflect a 10.3% monthly gain and 94.7% annual increase.

Nio’s September sales of 34,749 cars rose 11.0% month-on-month and 64.1% year-over-year, and its nine-month tally hit 201,221, up 34.8%. Li Auto’s deliveries increased 19.0% from August to 33,951 units but fell 36.8% year-over-year, bringing its January-through-September total to 297,149, down 13.1%. Tesla China does not publish monthly figures; based on insurance registrations, deliveries likely reached around 55,000 units in September, excluding exports from its Shanghai plant.
