Circunomics has officially opened its new battery testing laboratory in Roßdorf, near Darmstadt, marking the start of full-scale operations at the facility. The lab is designed to verify and refine the company’s AI-supported analyses of used battery cells by comparing software-generated predictions with real-world simulation data. This initiative will enhance the precision of Circunomics’ proprietary software in assessing battery state of health during and after first-life applications.

Funded in part by over €8 million raised in an early-2025 Series A financing round, the Roßdorf lab enables Circunomics to simulate detailed second-life scenarios—such as stationary energy storage systems—and to recommend the most suitable batteries for various projects. The facility can house multiple cell types simultaneously, exposing them to a range of stresses that mimic daily battery use in electric vehicles and other applications. Test parameters include rapid and slow successive charging cycles, DC charging currents up to 300 amps, varying degradation levels, and temperatures from –20 °C to 60 °C. Tests can run over periods from a few days to up to two years.

“Until now, we had our cells analyzed by an external service provider. We are now moving this task in-house which increases our efficiency and speeds up our data comparision. This enables us to offer our simulations and projections for second-life use with more accuracy and reliability.” Explains Jan Born, Co-Founder and CTO of Circunomics. He adds, “On the one hand, we have millions of data points collected made available to us during the first-life of a battery. Based on this, we have now used our AI supported software to analyze what the used battery is still capable of in its second-life before it is recycled. Through our own lab analyses, we can now see how a cell behaves in a simulated battery life. We can compare and verify the results obtained with those from the software.”

Up to six software and battery specialists can work in parallel within the secured facility, which features reliable power infrastructure, a CO₂ fire-extinguishing system, and continuous monitoring through data logging and camera recordings. These measures ensure that multiple tests can proceed under full load without interruption.

Founded in 2019, Circunomics offers an intelligent battery lifecycle management solution that includes a digital marketplace for battery trading and integrated analytics. By connecting partners across the battery supply chain, the company supports the circular economy, optimizes resource use, and helps reduce carbon footprints.
