DHL Supply Chain has entered into a multi-year agreement with Fortum Battery Recycling, a subsidiary of Nordic energy provider Fortum, to develop and implement customized logistics solutions for end-of-life electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The partnership is designed to enhance the circular economy in Europe’s e-mobility sector by ensuring efficient, safe and compliant handling of used batteries throughout the recycling process.
Under the contract, DHL Supply Chain will manage the safe collection, transportation, storage and delivery of spent EV batteries to Fortum’s recycling facilities. Leveraging its service logistics expertise, DHL will support continuous operation of Fortum’s advanced material recovery processes, which are capable of extracting lithium, cobalt and nickel with minimal residual waste. This integrated approach aims to close the loop for critical battery materials within Europe, for European markets.
“Our collaboration with Fortum underscores our commitment to providing innovative logistics solutions to meet the growing demands of e-mobility,” explains Hendrik Venter, CEO at DHL Supply Chain EMEA. “Through our expertise in service logistics and our global network, we can help Fortum expand their recycling capabilities while maintaining the highest safety and sustainability standards.”
Fortum Battery Recycling is the only company in Europe offering a full-spectrum recycling solution—from battery collection to recovery of high-purity raw materials—supporting the region’s transition to cleaner transportation. The collaboration with DHL is expected to strengthen Fortum’s capacity to process increasing volumes of end-of-life batteries as EV adoption accelerates.
For Fortum, the cooperation with DHL Supply Chain is an important step in further expanding its sustainable recycling solutions and making the market for electric vehicles even more environmentally friendly. “We are proud to be working with DHL Supply Chain to develop an efficient and sustainable logistics solution for the recycling of EV batteries,” comments Anssi Airas, Head of Business Line Battery at Fortum. “We believe that electrification of Europe is not possible without sustainable recycling of batteries taking place in Europe, for Europe. The cooperation with DHL is an essential building block for our mission to promote the circular economy and maximize resource conservation.”
The agreement aligns with both companies’ strategic objectives to reduce environmental impact and support sustainable supply chains in the rapidly expanding EV market.
