On September 8, 2025, ExxonMobil announced an agreement to acquire Superior Graphite’s U.S.-based assets and technology, as well as select international offices, to support its planned entry into the synthetic graphite market for battery anodes. Superior Graphite, with more than 100 years of experience in materials production, brings established processes and intellectual property that are expected to deliver lower energy intensity, higher throughput and more efficient land use compared to conventional graphite operations.
Synthetic graphite is a critical material for electric vehicles (EVs) and battery energy storage systems (BESS), where it serves as the anode component and directly influences charging speed and overall battery life. Unlike natural graphite, synthetic graphite can be produced with consistent quality by leveraging carbon-rich feedstocks from existing refining streams. This approach enables faster scaling and improved material performance.
By integrating Superior Graphite’s technology with its own operational scale and refining expertise, ExxonMobil aims to build a robust domestic supply chain for advanced graphite materials. The company believes this investment will not only enhance U.S. energy security but also support American manufacturing and job growth in the battery value chain.
ExxonMobil expects the combined operations to accelerate production ramp-up, offering synthetic graphite that provides faster charging rates and extended cycle life compared to many current commercial offerings. The acquisition underscores the company’s broader strategy to expand into low-carbon and advanced materials businesses, addressing the growing demand for high-performance batteries in the transportation and energy storage sectors.
As global demand for EVs and grid storage solutions continues to rise, ExxonMobil’s move into synthetic graphite production positions the company to play a significant role in the critical minerals supply chain needed for the energy transition. By leveraging both partners’ strengths, the effort aims to deliver advanced graphite materials at scale while promoting domestic economic growth.
