China-based Hongli Group Inc. announced a strategic refocus of its energy storage initiatives on solid-state lithium-ion battery technology. Following the establishment of a New Energy Solid-State Battery Division and the engagement of Dr. Philip A. Medina as an independent technical advisor, the company will center its efforts on developing solid-state battery solutions.
A 2025 review in Batteries, “Solid-State Lithium Batteries: Advances, Challenges, and Future Perspectives,” identifies solid-state lithium-ion batteries as a next-generation energy storage approach that replaces liquid electrolytes with a solid alternative. This design offers potential advantages in safety by eliminating flammable components, improving energy density, and extending cycle life. These attributes are particularly attractive for applications such as electric vehicles, wearable devices, and grid-scale energy storage.
As global demand for efficient, reliable energy storage grows—driven by broader electrification, renewable energy integration, and advanced consumer technologies—solid-state batteries are positioned to address evolving market needs. Hongli Group’s decision reflects these trends and its intention to leverage more than 25 years of expertise in complex steel profile manufacturing. The company plans to apply its production capabilities, product customization strengths, and deep industry knowledge to evaluate partnerships, pilot projects, and potential production pathways in the solid-state battery sector.
Jie Liu, Chief Executive Officer of Hongli Group, commented, “Our move into solid-state lithium battery technology represents a forward-looking step in our business evolution. We see significant growth opportunities in this domain and believe that by building on our manufacturing expertise, we can support the global energy transition and create long-term value.”
Hongli Group operates through contractual arrangements with Shandong Hongli Special Section Tube Co., Ltd. and its subsidiaries, specializing in cold roll formed steel profiles. With 11 production lines and more than 25 years of history, the company serves sectors such as mining, construction, agriculture and transportation, and maintains a customer network spanning over 30 cities in China, as well as markets in South Korea, Japan and the United States.
