Morrow Batteries ASA and Siemens Mobility have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to evaluate advanced lithium-ion battery applications. Under the agreement, the two companies will collaborate on Morrow’s existing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells and its next-generation lithium nickel manganese oxide (LNMO) technology. Activities include sharing technical information, conducting joint laboratory and field tests, and exchanging sample cells. Should the validation process prove successful, the partnership could evolve into a longer-term supply arrangement.

Morrow Batteries is developing its first LFP gigafactory in Arendal, Norway, leveraging local clean hydropower and aiming for N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP)-free production processes. Building on that facility, the company has set a target to introduce cobalt-free LNMO cells in 2027 or 2028. These high-voltage cells are designed to offer improved energy density while maintaining sustainability credentials through reduced reliance on critical raw materials.

For Siemens Mobility, the MoU represents an opportunity to secure access to European-manufactured battery technology tailored for rail, road, and other mobility solutions. By collaborating early in the development cycle, Siemens Mobility can assess the performance, safety, and lifecycle characteristics of Morrow’s battery chemistries. This groundwork will inform potential integration into future product lines, such as electric trains, trams, and charging infrastructure that require reliable, high-power energy storage.

The two organizations will begin with a series of validation tests to verify cell performance under real-world operating conditions. Both parties have agreed to coordinate development timelines and technical milestones, ensuring that any subsequent supply agreement aligns with Siemens Mobility’s procurement requirements and Morrow’s production ramp-up schedule.
