On September 16, 2025, Nanoscale Components, Inc. commissioned a modular GWh-scale roll-to-roll prelithiation line at its 34,000-square-foot facility in Bedford, New Hampshire. The new industrial-scale system integrates an electrochemical prelithiation step directly into electrode manufacturing, enabling electrodes to be prelithiated at high throughput and low cost. By adding lithium to electrodes before cell assembly, the process enhances energy density and capacity while accelerating formation and reducing defect rates. Because the energy gains provided by the prelithiation step outweigh its cost, the overall cost per kilowatt-hour for finished cells is lowered.
Nanoscale Components’ patent-protected electrochemical prelithiation process delivers multiple benefits: extended cycle life, improved rate performance, reduced scrap through earlier defect detection, and a smaller carbon footprint compared with traditional wet-chemical methods. Manufacturers can also shorten production timelines and lower the time and expense of cell formation.
The GWh-scale equipment is now available for sale, and Nanoscale Components is arranging trials for interested parties. Its Bedford facility includes advanced battery laboratories where customers can construct and test both prelithiated and conventional cells under controlled conditions, validating the technology’s performance.
With this commissioning, Nanoscale Components aims to offer battery producers and electric vehicle suppliers a scalable, cost-effective solution for improving cell performance and driving adoption of next-generation batteries.
