On December 12, 2025, SEAT & CUPRA opened its new battery system assembly plant at the Martorell factory in Spain. The facility represents a key component in the company’s and the country’s transition toward electrification and reinforces Spain’s role in European electromobility. Part of the Volkswagen Group’s battery strategy, the plant balances in-house and external cell supply to maintain access to evolving technologies.

The inauguration was attended by regional and industry leaders including the President of the Generalitat of Catalunya, Salvador Illa; the Minister of Industry and Tourism, Jordi Hereu; Thomas Schäfer, Chair of the SEAT and CUPRA Supervisory Board and Volkswagen Brand CEO; Markus Haupt, CEO of SEAT & CUPRA; and other members of the company’s executive team.

Built over two years with an investment of €300 million, the 64,000-square-metre facility can assemble one battery system every 45 seconds, reaching up to 1,200 systems per day and 300,000 per year. From 2026, it will exclusively supply battery systems for the CUPRA Raval and Volkswagen ID. Polo production lines, transporting systems via an automated 600-metre bridge. The plant integrates 11,000 solar panels to provide 70% of its electricity needs and features a water collection system equivalent to three Olympic swimming pools to enhance resource efficiency.

As part of the Group’s Center of Excellence Battery, the plant will assemble the new MEB+ battery system. This platform incorporates a unified cell design, a compact cell-to-pack architecture and an alternative lithium-iron phosphate chemistry option. According to the Center’s head, Günther Mendl, the system aims to deliver scale, flexibility and reduced reliance on external suppliers while advancing Europe’s battery industry.

The opening marks a pivotal moment in SEAT & CUPRA’s electrification journey, which began in 2020 with a €10 billion investment in Spain. Martorell is now positioned as a flexible production hub capable of manufacturing electric, hybrid and combustion models. The facility supports the Electric Urban Car Family project, comprising four electric models from three brands produced in Spain, and underscores SEAT & CUPRA’s commitment to sustainable mobility.
