SK On, a global battery and trading company, has announced its entry into the U.S. battery energy storage system (BESS) market with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. The company has secured a multi-year supply agreement with Flatiron Energy Development, a U.S. developer, owner and operator of utility-scale energy storage projects. Under the contract, SK On will deliver up to 7.2 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of BESS solutions for Flatiron projects across New England and other states through 2030.

The partnership launches with the delivery of containerized BESS units featuring 1 GWh of LFP batteries for a project in Massachusetts, with initial shipments slated for the second half of 2026. SK On will produce these batteries at its SK Battery America (SKBA) facility in Commerce, Georgia, leveraging existing electric vehicle battery production lines. This move underscores SK On’s commitment to diversify its portfolio and strengthen its U.S. presence by offering domestically manufactured energy storage solutions.

SK On brings extensive experience in electric vehicle battery manufacturing to the BESS market, emphasizing the cost competitiveness and safety of LFP chemistry, particularly suited for stationary applications where size and weight constraints are minimal. The company’s BESS products will feature a modular design to support flexible, scalable deployments. They will also incorporate advanced safety features such as heat propagation prevention and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)–based diagnostics to ensure reliable operation over time.

Established in 2021, Flatiron Energy Development manages the full value chain of utility-scale storage projects, from design and construction to long-term operation across North America. “Having a partnership with a global leader in battery production with strong engineering, and integration capabilities, along with domestic resources has become a strategic imperative” said Jonathan Poor, Chief Operating Officer and co-founder at Flatiron. “We look forward to deploying multiple projects under this partnership over the coming years.”

“This deal is significant as it expands both our product and business portfolio,” said Daejin Choi, Head of ESS Business at SK On. “We will continue to strengthen our presence in the BESS sector by leveraging our advanced technologies and production capabilities.”
