The Spanish government announced a major industrial investment project in Valladolid by battery manufacturer Gotion, totaling more than €940 million. Supported by a €138 million public grant from the Strategic Project for Recovery and Economic Transformation for the Electric and Connected Vehicle (PERTE VEC), the initiative aims to strengthen Spain’s position as a European hub for electric mobility.

Ministers Jordi Hereu (Industry and Tourism) and Óscar Puente (Transport and Sustainable Mobility) highlighted the public–private collaboration model as key to accelerating industrial transformation and attracting high-value investments. The project is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs, boost the local economy, and help stabilize population in the region.

Gotion’s investment focuses on two main areas: manufacturing battery cathodes—an essential component in electric vehicle batteries—and developing advanced recycling systems to recover strategic raw materials. This integrated approach is designed to reinforce the domestic value chain for electric vehicles and contribute to greater European industrial autonomy in a sector deemed critical for decarbonization.

The ministers emphasized that the project fits within a broader strategy to establish Spain as a leading center for sustainable electric mobility. Since its launch, PERTE VEC has mobilized over €3 billion and benefited nearly 400 companies across the automotive value chain. This program has already attracted significant investments in battery and electric vehicle production facilities in locations such as Sagunto, Navalmoral de la Mata, and Zaragoza.

Spain’s fast-growing electric vehicle market underpins this industrial push. In May 2026, more than 12,300 electric vehicles were registered—a year-on-year increase of over 30%—giving electrified cars a market share exceeding 10%. Year-to-date, electrified passenger vehicle registrations have risen by approximately 45%, demonstrating a structural shift toward electrification.

The government also stressed its commitment to legal certainty, administrative efficiency, and labor stability—factors deemed essential for the successful deployment of large-scale industrial projects. Ongoing social dialogue with strategic partners, such as Renault, was cited as vital for enhancing competitiveness in regions like Valladolid. Officials described the Gotion project as a historic opportunity to accelerate decarbonization, create quality employment, and foster a more innovative and sustainable industrial model in Spain.
