The Volkswagen Group has announced the launch of its “Electric Urban Car Family,” set to arrive in 2026 and designed to strengthen the company’s leadership in Europe’s electric small-car segment. This new line will include four distinct models from Volkswagen, CUPRA and Škoda, with prices starting at around €25,000. All vehicles share the upgraded MEB+ electric modular platform, leveraging the Group’s first use of its unified cell battery to boost economies of scale and deliver driving ranges of up to 450 kilometers.
In line with Volkswagen’s commitment to bringing advanced technologies to mainstream models, the Electric Urban Car Family will feature driver assistance systems typically found in higher segments, such as the latest Travel Assist with lane-change capability and traffic-light recognition. LED matrix lighting, full smartphone connectivity as a digital key, and integrated charging planning are all standard, while optional features include massage seats and remote pre-conditioning through a dedicated app. Each vehicle also supports DC fast charging as standard equipment.
By pooling development costs and production efficiencies across a single platform, the Group aims to capture around 20 percent of the rapidly growing electric small-car market in Europe. That share would translate to several hundred thousand vehicles sold annually once production ramps up. Industry forecasts suggest the continent’s electric small-car segment could grow to four times its current volume within eight years.
The model lineup will debut publicly at IAA Mobility, showcasing two Volkswagen brand options—a hatchback ID. Polo and an SUV variant based on the ID. CROSS Concept, including a sporty GTI version marking the first electric GTI model. CUPRA’s entry will be the Raval hatchback, characterized by its performance-oriented styling, while Škoda will introduce the Epiq city SUV, tailored for family and lifestyle buyers under the brand’s “Modern Solid” design philosophy.
