Company Overview

Eramet is a global mining and metallurgy company founded in 1880 in France with initial funding from the Rothschild family. Headquartered in Paris, it employs approximately 10,400 people and operates in Gabon, Senegal, Argentina, New Caledonia, Norway, and Indonesia. The company’s mission is to combine sustainable resource management with technological innovation to meet the growing demand for critical metals in clean energy technologies.

Battery Technology

Eramet’s battery technology centers on its advanced Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) process, achieving 90% recovery from brine at the Centenario plant in Argentina, which produces 24,000 tons of battery-grade lithium carbonate annually. Its research division, Eramet Ideas, has developed a closed-loop recycling system for lithium-ion batteries using hydrometallurgical refining to recover nickel, cobalt, and lithium for reuse. The company also advances production of nickel and cobalt with integrated quality control for battery manufacturing.

Products

Production of manganese, nickel, mineral sands, and lithium; battery-grade lithium carbonate (24,000 t/year) from Centenario DLE plant; nickel and cobalt materials for battery applications.

Recent Projects

2024: first lithium carbonate output from Centenario DLE plant in Argentina, making Eramet Europe’s first industrial-scale producer of battery-grade lithium carbonate; full acquisition of Argentine lithium operations by purchasing Tsingshan’s 49.9% stake; feasibility studies for battery-grade nickel-cobalt production in Indonesia; exploration of geothermal lithium extraction in France’s Alsace region.

Investors

Eramet’s initial investor was the Rothschild family in 1880. The company is now publicly traded on Euronext Paris with a widely held free float. No other specific major investors have been disclosed.
