FootPrint Coalition, founded in 2019 by Robert Downey Jr., combines venture capital and climate tech media to tackle environmental challenges. Officially launched as FootPrint Coalition Ventures in 2021, the firm is based in New York with offices in California. It supports scientific research through fast grants and produces content to boost awareness of climate solutions. Under the guidance of Jonathan Schulhof, Steve Levin, and managing director Rachel Kropa, the organization deploys resources to back innovators and amplify stories that drive measurable change. Downey Jr.’s global reach helps draw attention to emerging technologies and researchers tackling climate change.
The firm invests in early- and growth-stage startups across energy and utilities, food and agriculture, consumer goods, data and analytics, buildings and mobility, life sciences, carbon removal, waste management and conservation technology. With a focus on sustainable impact, it evaluates both financial return and environmental benefits, directing capital to companies that can reduce emissions or improve resource efficiency. By blending rigorous due diligence with mission-driven goals, FootPrint Coalition aims to support technologies that address pressing climate risks.
Among its clean tech commitments, the firm has backed Cactos, which repurposes electric vehicle batteries for grid storage, and Blue Line Battery, a producer of industrial lithium-ion cells. It has funded an all-electric RV project and Ampersand’s electric motorcycles and battery platforms for African markets. Recurrent, a startup providing detailed battery health data on used EVs, also receives support. In addition, investments in Gravity Well and Renewell convert unused oil and gas wells into energy storage sites, offering a path toward cleaner power systems.
