Gelion Europe (formerly OXLiD) develops lithium–sulfur and solid-state batteries from Nottingham, UK. The company focuses on nano-encapsulated sulfur cathodes, ultra-thin solid electrolytes and multi-layer pouch cells for aerospace, defense, mobility and energy storage applications.
OXLiD Ltd (founded 2022), now operating as Gelion Europe Ltd, is headquartered in Nottingham, UK. Founded by Dr. Adrien Amigues, the company develops lithium–sulfur (Li–S) and solid-state battery technologies for high-energy, lightweight applications. Its R&D and prototyping focus on multi-layer pouch cells, solid electrolytes, cathode active materials and recycling pathways. Gelion Europe aims to commercialize Li–S solutions for aerospace, defense, mobility and energy storage while maintaining UK-based research partnerships and integration within Gelion plc’s broader battery technology operations.
Gelion Europe specializes in lithium–sulfur cells incorporating nano-encapsulated sulfur cathodes, lithium metal anodes and ultra-thin solid electrolytes. Demonstrated cell energy densities around 395–402 Wh/kg illustrate its high-energy focus. Its sulfide-based solid-state separators are designed to improve cycle life, relax pressure/temperature constraints and simplify assembly for pouch formats. Supporting technologies include silicon anode formulations, electrode processing and material recycling. The combination targets safer, lighter batteries using abundant sulfur to reduce reliance on critical cathode metals.
Products and solutions include GEN 3 Li–S semi-solid-state cells, multi-layer pouch cells (>10 Ah), nano-encapsulated sulfur cathode materials and ultra-thin solid electrolytes. Offerings support aerospace, defense, drones/UAVs, e-aviation, maritime, clean mobility and stationary energy storage, emphasizing higher gravimetric energy, reduced material criticality and scalable prototyping for pre-commercial validation.
Recent projects include the DRIVE35 programme (September 2025) with QinetiQ, a £533,000 UK government award to scale multi-layer Li–S pouch cells for defense, aerospace and automotive validation and a planned demonstration at Cenex Expo 2026. In April 2025 Gelion Europe recorded revenue from factory acceptance testing of a 4 MWh BESS, supporting its move toward commercial demonstrations and system-level integrations.
Gelion Europe is a wholly owned subsidiary of Gelion plc following acquisition in November 2023. Gelion funded the acquisition and subsequent activity through capital raises (including a November 2023 raise and a December 2024 raise) and manages investor relations and group-level financing. Gelion plc also coordinates related subsidiaries for recycling and commercialization activities.
