FocalSpec’s patented Line Confocal Imaging (LCI) technology uses a broadband light spectrum and specialized optics to capture 3D surface topography, 2D intensity images, and subsurface tomographic data at up to 27 million data points per second. It enables real-time, non-contact inspection of transparent, curved, multilayered and reflective structures, detecting submicron defects such as delamination, scratches, dust, air gaps, burrs and roughness.

In 2025, FocalSpec demonstrated the use of LMI’s 3D smart sensors with FocalSpec LCI technology for quality control in EV battery production, showcasing inspection of transparent, reflective and multilayered battery components.
