Battery Technology

The VRB-ESS® technology uses vanadium ions in a liquid electrolyte for redox-based energy storage, featuring cost-effective ion-exchange membranes and specialized electrolyte formulations. It offers enhanced safety, recyclability, minimal degradation over thousands of cycles, scalable capacity (100 kW to over 100 MW), long-duration storage performance, efficient operation in varied climates, easy maintenance, and a lifespan exceeding 25 years.

Products

VRB-ESS® is the flagship vanadium flow battery, UL1973 certified, with virtually unlimited charge/discharge cycles, lifespan over 25 years, scalable from 100 kW to over 100 MW, designed for utility-scale and industrial applications with stable performance in diverse climates.

Recent Projects

In 2024, VRB Energy partnered with Shanxi Red Sun on a $55 million deal to build two factories in China (300 MW and 200 MW) and established VRB USA in Arizona with a 50 MW annual production facility. The joint venture (51% Red Sun, 49% VRB) includes a $35 million capital increase through 2025 and VRB’s receipt of $20 million for U.S. operations.

Investors

Ivanhoe Electric is the majority stakeholder. BCPG PLC invested $24M in 2021. Shanxi Red Sun Co. Ltd. invested $55M in 2024. Sparton Resources Inc., through VanSpar Mining, holds a 9.8% equity interest.
