Flux XII Inc. is an energy technology startup based in Madison, Wisconsin, specializing in organic-based flow battery systems for long-duration energy storage. The company was founded by researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, bringing over 30 years of combined experience in renewable energy materials and device design. Flux XII’s aim is to deliver safe, sustainable, and affordable energy storage solutions. Their work is directed at enabling the global transition to renewable energy while enhancing grid reliability and energy security.

Battery Technology

Flux XII’s primary technological innovation is a proprietary organic redox flow battery chemistry. This system uses sustainable, carbon-derived organic redox materials. These materials are dissolved in a pH-neutral, water-based electrolyte, creating a non-flammable, non-corrosive, and environmentally benign storage medium. This approach differs from conventional lithium-ion batteries and other flow battery chemistries that often rely on mined critical minerals and hazardous solvents.

Key elements of their technology include organic redox flow battery chemistry that uses carbon-based organic salts, which are available and domestically producible. The batteries integrate benign, pH-neutral water electrolytes that contribute to enhanced safety and sustainability.

Additionally, Flux XII designs and integrates ion-exchange membranes, essential for efficient, selective ion transport within the flow battery, which improves both operational safety and performance. The system integrates proprietary chemistries into modules, including membrane assemblies and electrolyte tanks, optimized for scalable, long-duration grid storage. These design decisions result in a system that avoids critical mineral mining, reduces environmental impact, and increases domestic supply chain security for raw materials.

Recent projects

Flux XII is actively engaged in building a prototype flow battery system. This prototype is designed to power a residential house, with the goal of demonstrating practical scalability and validating its technology. This development represents a progression towards their objective of creating container-sized, grid-ready battery systems. These systems are intended for deployment at renewable energy sites and distributed energy applications.

Investors

Flux XII is completing an approximately $1 million pre-seed funding round. The company has three known primary investors. These include the U.S. Venture Sustainability Accelerator, a Wisconsin-based incubator and accelerator. WARF Ventures, a venture capital firm also based in Wisconsin, is another investor. Additionally, Gigascale Capital, a California-based venture capital firm, has invested in the company.
