FREYR Battery is a clean energy solutions provider specializing in sustainable lithium-ion battery cell production. Founded in 2018, the company focuses on developing cost-competitive battery solutions using semi-solid technology. FREYR’s primary goal is to accelerate the transition to renewable energy and sustainable transportation through efficient battery manufacturing processes. The company’s strategic approach combines advanced manufacturing techniques with renewable energy sources, particularly hydroelectric power, to produce batteries with a minimal carbon footprint. FREYR’s production methods and technology choices position it as a significant contributor to the growing energy storage and electric vehicle markets.

Battery Technology

FREYR’s core technology centers on the SemiSolid™ platform, which implements an integrated manufacturing process for lithium-ion batteries. This technology begins with electrode coating and proceeds through electrode stacking to create independent unit cells containing cathodes, anodes, and separators. The manufacturing process is designed to maximize efficiency while maintaining high safety standards.

The company’s battery cells are engineered for multiple applications, including energy storage systems (ESS) and commercial mobility solutions. FREYR’s manufacturing approach incorporates 100% renewable energy, resulting in batteries with substantially reduced environmental impact. The production process emphasizes quality control and automation, utilizing advanced manufacturing techniques to ensure consistent cell performance.

FREYR’s technology roadmap includes plans for expanding production capacity to exceed 200 GWh annually by 2030. The company’s Customer Qualification Plant (CQP) in Norway serves as a development center for perfecting manufacturing processes and validating new technological improvements. This facility demonstrates FREYR’s commitment to continuous innovation in battery production.

Recent Projects

In late 2024, FREYR completed the acquisition of Trina Solar’s U.S. manufacturing facility in Wilmer, Texas. This 5 GW solar module manufacturing site began operations in November 2024 and is expected to reach full production capacity by the second half of 2025. The company has secured contracts for 30% of the facility’s production output with U.S. customers.

FREYR is also developing a 5 GW solar cell manufacturing plant, scheduled to begin construction in Q2 2025. This facility is projected to create approximately 1,800 direct jobs and start production in the second half of 2026.

Investors

FREYR Battery became publicly traded through a business combination with Alussa Energy Acquisition Corp. The merger, which valued the combined company at $1.4 billion, brought significant investment capital. Encompass Capital Advisors LLC participated as part of Alussa Energy’s sponsorship team. The company maintains strong relationships with institutional investors and continues to attract capital through its listed status on the New York Stock Exchange.
