Green Graphite Technologies (GGT) is a Montreal-based enterprise founded in 2021 by Gillian Holcroft and Kevin Watson, focusing on sustainable production of battery-grade graphite. The company specializes in transforming mined natural flake graphite and recycled materials into environmentally responsible solutions for electric vehicles (EVs). Their innovative processes support the increasing demand for high-purity graphite while minimizing environmental effects.

Battery Technology

GGT has developed two proprietary technologies that form the foundation of their operations. The first, GraphPure™, is an efficient method for purifying natural flake graphite. This process breaks down graphite into spheres, polishes them, and applies a carbon coating to achieve purities of up to 99.99%. Unlike traditional methods that use hazardous hydrofluoric acid, GraphPure™ operates with minimal environmental impact and uses electricity instead of fossil fuels.

The second technology, GraphRenew™, focuses on extracting and purifying graphite from spent lithium-ion batteries. This innovative recycling process allows the recovered graphite to be reused in new batteries, creating a sustainable cycle of material use. Both technologies are designed to be cost-effective and environmentally responsible, with reagents being regenerated during the process to reduce supply chain emissions.

The company’s modular approach allows for scalable production up to 20,000 tonnes per annum of battery-grade graphite, meeting the growing demands of the EV industry while maintaining strict quality standards.

Recent Projects

In September 2024, GGT secured $816,000 in funding through Next Generation Manufacturing Canada for a collaborative project with Calumix Technologies, totaling $3.4 million. Additionally, the company received $682,000 from the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network’s R&D Partnership Fund for advancing their graphite purification technology in partnership with Rain Carbon Canada Inc.

Investors

GGT has attracted significant investment from various sources. BDC Capital’s Climate Tech Fund and the Sustainable Chemistry Alliance co-led a $2.1 million seed financing round in October 2023. The company also received a $1.1 million grant from Sustainable Development Technology Canada for GraphPure™ development, and $0.5 million from PRIMA Quebec for GraphRenew™ technology piloting.
